Case Study 05 Backyard Water Feature

A pie-shaped lot in Rockland Park, anchored by a corner water feature.

A flat, angled dirt yard and a deck too small for gatherings became a ground-level firepit patio facing a custom waterfall, lit for long summer nights.

Location Rockland Park, NW Calgary
Timeline June – July 2026
Duration 5 Weeks
Investment $100K – $120K
The Project

More room to gather, and a view worth sitting for.

Our Rockland Park clients had a pie-shaped, flat yard of open dirt, angled along the property line. They wanted a water feature off their deck.

The deck spanned the full width of the house but was a little too small for them. They wanted to use the yard more efficiently and add space down below for a firepit area.

Taz proposed a water feature in the corner as the yard's centrepiece, facing the home so the view from the deck would be the best seat in the house. A firepit patio then connects the deck to the water feature, giving the family more space when they gather and a little more privacy by being on the ground.

The rest of the yard follows the angle of the property line. Softscaping lines the edges and clearly defines each space: the deck, the patio and the open greenspace beside it. Landscape lighting finishes it off, turning the whole yard calm and glowing as the sun sets on warm summer nights.

How Taz Solved It

An angled lot, planned around the view from the deck.

The challenge

A pie-shaped, flat yard of open dirt, angled along the property line. The existing deck ran the full width of the house but was too small for gatherings, and there was no space below it for a firepit.

The owners wanted a water feature off the deck, without losing usable space in a yard that narrows toward the back.

The approach

Place the water feature in the corner as a feature piece, facing the home, so it frames the view from the deck. Then link the deck and the water feature with a ground-level firepit patio for more room and more privacy.

Line the rest of the yard with softscaping that follows the property line, clearly separating the deck, the patio and the open greenspace, and finish with landscape lighting for the evenings.

The Design

Every piece planned before the first shovel.
