With nearly an acre to work with, although with some grading issues, we were able to transform this unique acreage home with some unique landscaping ideas.
We installed a multi-tiered retaining wall system that works both aesthetically (as a feature piece) and functionally (to help support land drainage).
On the North side, we created a central patio with a L-shaped outdoor kitchen and open dining space. We matched the custom stonework to the existing pillar within the outdoor kitchen, creating a fluid connection between the areas.
On the South side, we added multi-level retaining wall planters to create some serenity while also including a greenspace for the kids.
With a small backyard space between the home and the detached garage, the client wanted a simple design that wasn’t over the top.
Our proposal was simple: a paving stone walkway which connected to a concrete patio with a dining area. Located more centrally was a beautiful greenspace with garden beds and feature boulders tied around it.
The centre piece was a water feature that acts like a sculptural art piece, but added a lovely natural flow to proceedings.
The final result was a simplistic, maintenance free and picturesque backyard.
With an aging, pressure-treated deck, the homeowners of this lovely Panorama Hills home wanted to revamp their backyard area. Tazscapes Inc. proposed a simple “three-tier space” which would have beautiful, yet functional cascading effects.
Firstly, we installed a composite deck for their new BBQ on the first tier. On the next level, we added a spacious dining area, with custom granite surrounding it, while on the third tier, we added a lounge spot surrounding a fire pit.
The whole section was covered by a pergola that enhanced privacy and created a unique shadow over the area.
For this Springbank home, the clients wanted a large patio space while enjoying greenery around it.
Our proposal was to install a two-side retaining wall, which would have a two-prong effect: account for the grade change while catching the attention of the central feature: a paving stone patio.
This central point included a transitional composite wood boardwalk with a water feature flowing underneath, creating a “bridge”.
Along the side of the yard, was a Roman Pisa wall which created a connection between the front yard and the backyard.
For this brand new home in Springbank Hill, the owners wanted to add a more native and natural atmosphere to their backyard – which we duly obliged.
We added a natural rock retaining wall that compensated for the site elevations while also tying into the rustic theme of the yard. From there, a paving stone walkway connected to a cedar pergola which covered a dining area and fire bowl.
To finish off this project and add a touch of nature to it, we installed a natural rock water bubbler with surrounding mature trees. The sounds of these spaces created the perfect atmosphere of this new home.
The homeowners of this West Hillhurst home were unsure how to maximize their backyard space. Luckily, Tazscapes proposed an idea that would work to their benefit.
Our first step was building and installing a two-level composite deck, which included a built-in outdoor kitchen and a spacious dining area. We matched the outdoor kitchen to the fireplace to make a visual connection and compliment the granite countertop.
On the second level was a calming lounge room, which was covered by a cedar pergola, creating an intimate private area for the homeowners to enjoy this perfect outdoor oasis.
Opportunities for a major upgrade for this Watermark were present, and Tazscapes Inc. was happy to offer a stunning proposal that elevates the property.
Our design was a natural stone retaining wall with a mulch hill with steps that lead up to a destination point – a stunning firepit patio, which opened up to panoramic mountain views.
At the base of the hill, was a paving stone patio, created for a dining area. This was covered by a pergola. Finally, a pathway to the front driveway connected to create a consistent flow.
The homeowners of this Mount Royal home had large space to maximize and a distinct vision. They wanted to utilize their backyard area for their retirement in the future. These features include a structural deck which incorporated their existing hot tub, and a greenspace with minimal maintenance.
Tazscapes got to work on their vision, building a composite deck with easy access to the hot tub. The deck was tiered while to mitigate the various slopes of the yard, smooth concrete retaining walls were installed. We also added two water features as focal points to add to that retirement feel. As for the greenspace, we installed artificial turf, removing any maintenance when they’re retired.
For this Redstone home, the clients had a small backyard and wanted to make better use of the space. Which is what we did.
We installed a tiered composite deck with stairs that connected to a paving stone walkway through the backyard. To the right of the deck, was a paving stone patio with a firepit, creating a relaxing lounge area. In front of it, we added a layer of smooth artificial grass to bring some ‘greenery’ to the space.
On the edges, we installed concrete curbing, which separated the grass and walkway to a rock section, which included outdoor lighting.
This lovely house, located in Northwest Calgary, had a small space with several grading issues. Our approach was to maximize this space and use their grading issues to our advantage.
Firstly, we demolished the existing pressure-treated deck and replaced it with a composite deck, which we placed in the BBQ pit area. From there, we used an aesthetic retaining wall to divide the outdoor fire pit, separating it from the dining area. We further added LED lighting around the space and a privacy screen around the area.
Finally, we added decorative rocks and a water feature in between the two spaces, to further break down the areas.
The clients from this Tuscany home wanted to expand on their space, opening it up. Our proposal included building a stone stairway leading down from the deck to the artificial grass space, which sprawled all over the backyard.
At the very bottom of the artificial grass, we added a natural rock retaining wall that separated the home from the community walkway at the back. To the side, we added three, stand-alone garden beds, surrounded by mulch, adding a natural garden-element to the yard. We finally carefully placed outdoor lighting around the backyard to make it pop to life at night.
For this unique home, the owners were unsure what to do with such a small space, and were concerned that they were never able to enjoy that usable and magnificent outdoor living space like they always wanted.
We proposed a new plan which would bring their space to life. Our plan focused on different areas within the yard, including a BBQ cooking spot, a gas fire table as a seating area and a cozy hot tub area. All this was covered by a pergola to add privacy and comfort.
The end result? A small oasis to be enjoyed for years to come
With a fantastic view of the ravines in Bearspaw, the client wanted to create the perfect combination for it: an entertaining hotspot for family and friends. We knew that a complete redesign and remodel was required.
Firstly, we removed their existing deck before replacing it with a composite deck with a framed glass railing. Then, we installed a natural rock kootenay retaining wall, which led into a dry creek bed which was supported by a smooth concrete curbing fence. We finally added a L-Shaped cedar privacy screen, which covered a newly-installed custom outdoor BBQ set and firepit area.
This lovely home in Springbank had wide open spaces, but lacked a consistent flow – or anything for that matter. We aimed to change it completely.
We started by excavating the ground before creating and building a natural rock kootenay retaining wall that surrounded a stamped concrete patio section. This wall was loaded with cedar mulch, a dry creek bed and 20m rundle rock bed. To add a touch of serenity to the area, we installed a natural waterfall feature, which lights up during the nights.
Now, our client has ample space in which to embrace their natural elements.
With an open acreage in this Cochrane, the opportunity was ripe to create something more magical and functional. Our landscape design led us to build a resort in their very own backyard!
Firstly, we build them a composite deck with a louvered roof and frameless glass rails. There were also track screens installed with built-in heaters for the winter months, which surrounded a custom outdoor BBQ set and fire pit area.
As you make your way down, you’ll walk down natural rock steps, connecting to slate stepping which leads to a natural waterfall feature. All this was positioned next to a putting green and a natural water stream that ran through the whole site.
This project had a lot of potential to be transformed into something amazing. The homeowners of this Huntington Hills house wanted it to reflect and bring the same feel from their Candmore home.
Our mission was to create a connecting feel throughout the backyard space. The stamped concrete walkway leads from the front to the backyard, passing over a cedar walking bridge. It leads to a cedar deck and black picket railing and also a slate rock patio area with a firepit in the middle, allowing the homeowners and their guests to enjoy an evening wine.
Finally, we added a waterfall pond and a sod green space that would add that “natural” feel to the property.
The Royal Oak homeowners had a simple back yard that already had a built-in natural retaining wall and wanted to incorporate a more friendly seating area to enjoy their yard more.
We discussed possibilities for shade and proposed a reciprocal pergola feature to give them a great focal point.
We also wanted to create a backdrop of a water feature to utilize the existing natural rock and create a unique lounging space.
The end result was a natural landscape that mimicked the ravines they backed on to while giving them ample space to entertain and mitigate slopes to allow for more open greenspace.
For this project, these West Hillhurst homeowners were unsure of how to maximize their backyard space, particularly when inviting guests over. They had a small area between their home and a detached garage and didn’t know the best way to transform it.
Our proposal was simple: a two-level composite deck with a built-in outdoor kitchen, and designated areas with a fireplace for dining and lounging. We included matching stonework for both the kitchen and the fireplace to make a visual connection while adding a granite countertop to create a flow.
A cedar pergola above the dining area, alongside a private screen, created the perfect private spot for all get-togethers.

This backyard in Downtown Calgary required a complete transformation, aiming to give it new life.
We created and built a composite deck with slick black rails which surrounded a unique lounge spot before a patch of artificial grass, which gave it a wonderful natural element.
To add a touch of serenity to the space, we added a miniature waterfall feature with a beautiful pond with outdoor lighting beneath the water to bring it to life at night. This was all layered across the newly-installed retaining wall.
The end result was a transformation that elevated the quality and curb appeal of the property and brought a smile to the homeowners.
For this project, the home already had an existing deck made of stone with a hot tub on it. However, the stone was faded and needed to be revamped while the hot tub was exposed to the elements and had no privacy.
Our plan was to remove the deck and replace it with a composite decking (ensuring it lasted longer than the stone design) with a firepit and lounge area while building elements around the hot tub, particularly a louvred roof pergola.
We had electric shades installed into the pergola to provide immediate privacy to the homeowners, before removing the existing trampoline to allow more greenspace thanks to our artificial turf lawn.
At the start, our client wanted simply to re-do the deck and her damaged grass. We proposed a more detailed design that looked to transform the backyard space into something more functional.
We reworked the deck, but added sets of seating areas for cooking, dining and lounging, separately. This created a smooth transition from cooking to eating, and finally to relaxing.
We installed a waterfall feature to the newly-installed retaining wall, which would also enhance sensory perception of that space. Finally, we installed artificial turf lawn which removed any future issues with the dog and added maintenance-free greenery to the home.
The challenge in this yard was the slope throughout the expansive yard. Using this slope, we were able to install a beautiful cascading natural water feature that would engross the paving stone patio.
The natural feel of stone selection along with the wood pergola gave a beautiful outdoor camping feel – something our clients really wanted. The final result was able to achieve not only a space for lounging with crashing water behind you but also an open green space that is more useable.
This project was designed to create a tiered space broken up by the water feature cascading down.
The home addition was an enclosed outdoor area complimented with an outdoor kitchen on composite decking.
The patio area allowed the clients to face their yard as they sat around the surrounding mature trees.
This West Hillhurst landscaping project started with making the Hot-Tub area a feature piece with the ability to use it in the colder months.
As the Design process evolved, we were able to create a beautiful composite deck for dining but also a step-up area specifically for the Hot-Tub. Adding the louvered roof pergola only enhanced intimacy and protected from rain/snow.
The Patio area was a beautiful integration of concrete and paving stones to create a welcoming environment for guests to enjoy as they have the water feature running in the background.
